Original WW1 era “Bavarian type” Nahkampfmesser fighting dagger in hard to find top-shape condition; made by Hugo Köller Stahlwarenfabrik in Solingen, Germany. This is a classic “Bavarian” Nahkampfmesser (close combat knife) or Kampfmesser trench knife with spear-point blade, full-tang construction, coffin-shaped handle with wood handle scales and original metal scabbard. This exact type is illustrated on page 116 the excellent French reference book Knives and Daggers-Bayonets Used by the German Army During 1914-1945 by Christian Mary (see the scans attached). These private-purchase weapons were very popular with the German infantrymen as they proved to be handy multi-purpose weapons/tools; something the standard-issue long Mauser bayonet lacked.
This fighting knife is in much better-than-average condition with no dings or edge nicks on the blade. Solid full-tang construction; the dagger it is about 10-1/2” / 26.7 cm overall; the blade is about 5-1/4” / 14 cm; original leather washer is still on. Ricasso is sharply struck with HUGO KÖLLER / “spread wings Imperial eagle” logo on one side and “fraktur” (small Imperial crown) inspector’s acceptance stamp on the other. The blade is very sharp still; the tip is intact; no pitting or rust on the blade. In spite of the advanced age, original wood handle grips are in great shape with just one thing crack on one side near the pommel. All parts are tight with no play. Original metal scabbard is in great shape, considering the age with about 50% of the original black finish remaining. Original leather belt hanger and keeper are intact; the leather is soft and supple.
After 100 plus years this original Nahkampfmesser dagger / Germany Hugo Koller WW1 fighting knife is in 100% serviceable condition still. Great overall condition and quite rare these days – today most of the surviving Germany Hugo Koller WW1 fighting knife types are in private collections & rarely come up for sale.
