Original WW1 era dual-edge Nahkampfmesser fighting dagger in well-preserved condition with original scabbard; made by Union Messer und Metallwarenfabrik Zella in Zella municipality, Germany. This is a classic “private purchase” Nahkampfmesser (close combat knife) or Kampfmesser trench knife with spear-point blade, heavy-duty steel S-guard, curved “notched” wood handle, and original metal scabbard. This exact type is illustrated on pages 95-96 the excellent French reference book Knives and Daggers-Bayonets Used by the German Army During 1914-1945 by Christian Mary (see the scans attached). These private-purchase weapons were very popular with the German infantrymen as they proved to be handy multi-purpose weapons/tools; something the standard-issue long Mauser bayonet lacked.
This fighting dagger is in better-than-average condition with no dings or edge nicks on the blade. Hidden tang construction with “split” wood handle scales; the dagger it is about 10-1/2” / 26.7 cm overall; the blade is about 5-7/8” / 15 cm. Ricasso is sharply struck with Union / Zella St. Bl. logo on one side. The blade is very sharp still; the tip is intact; no pitting on the blade. In spite of the advanced age, original wood handle grips are in great shape with just one thing crack on one side near the guard. Wood handle scales are tight; the guard has a tiny bit of a play. Original metal scabbard is in great shape, considering the age. Original leather belt hanger and keeper are intact; the leather is soft and supple still.
After 100 plus years this original Nahkampfmesser dagger / Germany WW1 Union Zella fighting knife is in 100% serviceable condition still. This fighter is in great overall condition and this type is VERY rare these days – today most of the surviving Germany WW1 Union Zella fighting knife types are in private collections & rarely come up for sale.
