Germany Karl Goetz 1914 Admiral Spee medal (K-146); exceedingly rare original WW1 era 102mm cast bronze type in excellent overall condition with original chocolate-brown patina. FREE EXPEDITED SHIPPING WITHIN THE US FOR THIS ITEM.
This rare extra-large medal was dedicated to the death of the German Imperial Navy Vice Admiral Von Spee and both of his sons Heinrich and Otto in the Battle of the Falkland Islands on December 8, 1914. In that engagement the entire East Asia Squadron of the Imperial German Navy was sunk and the Vice Admiral and both of his sons were killed in action, along with 1,871 other German sailors and officers.
The medal still has its original mate chocolate-brown finish and patina; not cleaned or tempered (Kienast The Medals of Karl Goetz reference #146). This is a VERY hard-to-find early WW1 era medal, especially in this size. This is largest type of all Goetz medals – about 102 mm in diameter, this specimen is about 240 grams. Original chocolate-brown patina throughout; no typical dings or scratches. A couple of minor dark spots and a few small contact mark on the the rim are noted for accuracy. This original WW1 era Germany Karl Goetz 1914 Admiral Spee medal came out of an old collection assembled several decades ago. This rare early WW1 Goetz medal will be a welcome addition to any collection.
