Original World War 2 era folding survival machete manufactured by Cattaraugus Cutlery Company in Little Valley, NY. Not a particularly scarce type, by VERY hard-to-fin UNUSED with original factory edge, like this attractive specimen. This type was issued to the US Air Force and Navy pilots as part of their survival kit in case of a bail-out. These were usually carried in the USAF M592 survival pack attached to the pilot’s parachute harness – see a reference photo of one such kit attached. Regardless of the original intent, these machetes were very popular with the American GI’s and saw lots of action in the Pacific theater of the War. This particular type is illustrated on pages 69 in U.S. MILITARY KNIVES; BOOK TWO published in 1973 by M. H. Cole – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the book’s scans attached).
This survival machete was manufactured by Cattaraugus Cutlery Co. this maker is harder to find as the majority were manufactured by Camillus. The blade is intact with original factory edge, no edge bumps or nicks; the tip is undamaged; original edge is razor-sharp; there is still some factory oil on the blade. When fully opened the blade is nice and tight; blade lock is in perfect working order. Original metal blade safety cover is included (most of these covers had a tendency to get lost right away); original bluing is intact. Original black plastic grips are in excellent condition with no chips; the handle is tight with no play; one hairline crack on one side is noted for accuracy. The machete is about 15-1/2″ / 39.5 cm opened; the blade is about 10″ / 25 .5 cm. The blade is finely etched Cattaraugus USA on the side. This original WW2 Cattaraugus USAF survival machete has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos.
