Description
Rare American WW2 era US Army/Navy Pilot survival/fighting knife manufactured during the war by W.R. CASE & SONS CUTLERY COMPANY. This type was issued to the American air crews as an all-purpose fighting/utility knife in case of a bail-out. Case Cutlery is one of the oldest American knife makers in continues operation in the US. These Case Pilot Knives are a lot scarcer than similar-purpose 5″ blade knives made by Camillus. During the war only a small order of “pilot knives” was placed with Case Cutlery; a rare find in any condition these days. This exact type is illustrated on page 90 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the book’s page scan attached).
The knife used but it is better-than-average condition for the type, considering the typical abuse in the field. Ricasso is stamped with a simple large “square font” CASE logo; the edge has been re-sharpened, it’s razor-sharp still; the tip is intact. Stacked leather washers handle with red-n-black spacers, bronze double-guard, and a solid aluminum “mushroom head” pommel with a lead-sealed retention lug-nut. The handle is in great condition; all parts are tight with no play. The knife is about 9-1/8″ / 23.2 cm overall; the blade is about 5″ /12.7 cm long. Original brown leather scabbard is in excellent shape, considering the age. The leather is soft and supple; the keeper is near-perfect, it’s nice and tight; all original rivets are intact. Overall, this WW2 Case XX Pilot Knife is in above-average condition for the type. Don’t miss your chance to add this rare WW2 era American fighter it to your collection!
This rare WW2 Case XX Pilot Knife and original scabbard have not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the knife 😉 I have a few more vintage Case XX knives, as well as WW2 era combat knives and bayonets, scarce WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers and trench knives from other countries available for sale – please take a look in our Militaria section.
