Rare antique Victorian era fighting knife made mid to late 1800s in the city of Salem, Tamil Nadu, British India. Arnachellum was a famous English 19th century maker of knives, hunting spears, daggers and cutlery for the Indian and British hunting equipment markets. A scarce fighting knife type in general made by one of the hard-to-find makers. These Arnachellum Salem fighting/hunting knives are rare in any shape or form nowadays, especially with tin better grades.
The blade is sharply stamped ARNACHELLUM / SALEM logo on ricasso. A generous-size crown stag handle is finished with a fancy “scull cup” type iron pommel. Balled cross guard and retention collar are made of high-carbon steel as well. These solid, large-blade hunting/fighting daggers were popular among the big-game hunters of the British Empire. This attractive fighter is about 14-1/2″ / 36.8 cm overall; large spear-point blade is about 9-1/4″ / 23.5 cm long. The blade has been lightly re-sharpened; it is very sharp still; the tip is intact. Original crown stag handle scales are in excellent overall condition, considering the age. No chips, cracks, or repairs; al parts are solid with no play. Brown leather sheath is probably a later replacement; it is in excellent condition. All stitching is intact; the leather is soft and supple.
