Rare Victorian era complete 1894 Maundy coin set: silver 4 Pence, 3 Pence, 2 Pence, and 1 Penny, still in the hard-to-find original issue coin leather bound coin case. All four coins are in Uncirculated condition with very attractive dark-gray with rainbow overtones patina. Original mintages were typically in low thousands for most years. This “Maundy money” set is a part of the centuries old British tradition: each year, on Maundy Thursday the British monarch hands out a symbolic charity amount during a religious service. The number of people who receive the gift matches the exact age of the monarch in years. If the king or queen is 80 years old, 80 men and 80 women get the gift, hence a very uneven number of complete Maundy sets issued each year. Only 8,976 Maundy coin sets were issued in 1894.
