This is a scarce type in general as this 1-year commemorative type wasn’t popular at the time of its release and it wasn’t selling well. Nowadays this issue is VERY hard-to-find in original mint state as the entire unsold portion of this issue ended up at the bottom of Manila Bay during the war.
All unsold Philippines commemoratives issues were stored within the Philippines Treasury in Manila. To prevent their capture by the advancing Japanese forces, in early 1942 the entire batch of unsold 1 Peso and Half-Peso commemoratives was packed in crates and dumped in the Manila Bay. Along with them went into the sea about 15 million (!!) Pesos in silver coins, plus medals and other valuables that the American forces could not remove in time to the mainland United States. Some of these crates were recovered after the war but many were lost forever. All recovered coins are badly corroded by salt water; original mint-state specimens are hard-to-find these days.
This mint-state specimen has most of its original mint luster remaining; it is about 27.5 mm in diameter, 10 grams, reeded rim.
