France M1866 Chassepot bayonet dated 1872, original metal scabbard with matching serials is included, great overall condition, considering the age.
Original model M1866 Chassepot Yataghan sword bayonet for the French Fusil Modèle 1866 rifle; made in 1872 at the St. Etienne arms plant. The M1866 was, at the time of its entry into the service, one of the most advanced military rifle in the world. It had served the French well in the Franco-Prussian war (although France has lost in that conflict). Many thousands of M1866 Chassepot rifles and bayonets were captured by the Germans and redistributed to a number of militaries around the world. This specimen is the original, non-modified M1866 example, complete with the serial-matching original metal scabbard.
This original, uncut and unmodified France M1866 Chassepot bayonet is about 27-1/2″ / 70 cm overall; the blade is about 22-5/8″ / 57.5 cm. Multiple arsenal proof marks on ricasso, on the hooked quillon , and the scabbard are nice and sharp; matching serials No. 96979. No edge nicks or rust on the blade; the tip is intact. Cast bronze handle is excellent; bayonet release spring is nice and tight. All handle parts are tight with no play; a few light contact marks on the bronze are noted for accuracy. Steel scabbard is in great shape as well; no dents or nick marks. This France M1866 Chassepot bayonet is in excellent overall condition, considering the age.
This France M1866 Chassepot bayonet has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, the set is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos.
