Rare WW2 era fighting knife manufactured during the war by Gregory Steel Products (Gregsteel) in Melbourne, Australia. The blades were made by Gregsteel, these classic “see through” aluminum handles were cast on the blades by Keech Castings. This exact type is illustrated on page 178 of the well-researched BRITISH AND COMMONWEALTH MILITARY KNIVES book by Ron Flook and on page 68 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – both authors are well-established experts on the subject of US and Allies’ military edged weapons (see the books scans attached).
This rare heavy-duty Australia WW2 fighting knife is in great overall condition – no chips or edge nicks on the edge; heavy duty carbon steel blade is in very good overall condition with just a few light rust post present. The edge is very sharp still, the tip is intact; a few contact marks on the spine are noted for accuracy. This fighting knife is about 11″ / 28.2 cm overall; the blade is about 6-7/8″ / 17.5 cm long. The blade and aluminum handle are completely unmarked, as intended. The handle is tight with no play; al parts are intact.
Original leather scabbard is is a bit dry but intact. The front panel is signed FROM J. COFFEY TO GEORGE QUIGLEY in large bold letters. The sheath is in great shape overall, considering the age; original keeper is intact. Almost 90 years after it was made this rare Australia WW2 fighting knife is in 100% serviceable condition still.
