Description

WW2 New Caledonia fighting knife with 6.25 inch dagger blade, genuine stag handle, WW II era leather scabbard. VERY rare “private purchase” type fighter – don’t miss your chance to add this beauty to your collection!

Rare original WW2 era “New Caledonia” type fighting dagger with a spear-point dual edge blade, a genuine New Caledonia stag handle and WW2 era leather scabbard. These handy fighters were made during the war by the local craftsmen on the island of New Caledonia from the locally available materials and stag of a native deer. The locals made a brisk business selling these attractive fighting daggers to the passing Allied sailors and the Marines. This is one of the scarcer types of the “private purchase” fighting knives – this exact type is illustrated on page 139 of THEATER MADE MILITARY KNIVES OF WW2 book by Bill Wright – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see book’s page scan attached).

This specimen is used, but it is in better than average condition for the type. The blade has been lightly re-sharpened; it is very sharp still; the tip is intact. This is a marked specimen – bronze guard is engraved New Caledonia on one side, Noumea on the other (New Caledonia’s capital). The blade is unmarked, as intended. The handle is a well-formed piece of a deer stag secured with 2 iron pins. One small stag repair under the guard is noted for accuracy. No other detractions; all parts are tight with no play.  This rare WW2 New Caledonia fighting knife is about 10-3/4″ / 27.3 cm overall; the blade is about 6-1/8″ / 15.8 cm long.

The scabbard seems to be a sheath that was originally made for the WW2 era Western Cutlery L77 stiletto dagger. It is not the hand-made “New Caledonia” type but it fits the blade perfectly. The scabbard is in great overall condition, considering the age – the leather is soft and supple still; all rivets and stitching are tight. The throat is initialed EFK; the front panel is signed as well but I can’t read the name. Overall, this original “private purchase” WW2 New Caledonia fighting knife is in 100% serviceable condition still. With proper care it will last you another 90 years 😉

Also, I have another WW2 era “New Caledonia fighter” available for sale, please take a look.

This attractive WW2 New Caledonia fighting knife and its hard-to-find original leather scabbard have not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, this set is in original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; Garand clips are not included with the knife 😉 I have a few more American WW2 era combat knives and bayonets, as well as several scarce WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers and trench knives from other countries available for sale – please take a look in our Militaria section.
