Original WW2 era American fighting knife manufactured during the war by Western Cutlery in Boulder, Colorado – this type is commonly known as the “Shark” model fighting knife. This handy knife was very popular with the troops and thousands were used as intended in virtually every theater of the war. This is an early-production blued-blade Type 1 Shark with iron guard and aluminum pommel – later issues had simple bright-finish blades and pommels made out of Bakelite plastic since aluminum was a strategic material conserved for the war effort. This exact type is illustrated on page 233 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert and author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see page’s scan attached).
This rare “blued-blade” variety Shark fighter is about 10-1/4″” / 26 cm overall; fullered “gun-blued” blade is about 5-7/8″ /15 cm long; about 95% of the original bluing remaining. The edge has been lightly re-sharpened; it is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact. Stacked leather washers handle with colored fiber spacers at the ends; iron guard and solid aluminum pommel. The handle is tight; all parts are solid with no play. Most of these Shark fighting knives were used in the field as intended; this type is rare in decent shape. Original leather scabbard is in excellent shape, considering the age. Looks practically unused with no cuts, rips, or puncture holes; the keeper is nice and tight; all original stitching and rivets are intact (one small area of stitching loss is noted for accuracy). The leather is soft and supple still – this type is VERY rare this nice. With proper care this WW2 Western Shark fighting knife will last you another 75 years 😉
This attractive “blued blade” type WW2 Western Shark fighting knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the knife 😉 I have a few more WW2 era Western Cutlery fighting knives knives, as well as WW2 era combat knives and bayonets, scarce WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers and trench knives from other countries available for sale – please take a look in our Militaria section.
