WW2 Kutmaster fighting knife made from M1 bayonet production overruns. Scarce Bowie-tip/blued handle type; original leather scabbard; great overall condition, considering the age.
An interesting WW2 era American fighting knife made by Kutmaster (Utica) from M1 bayonet production overruns. This was a “stop-gap” measure to satisfy the demand for the much-needed fighting knives during the war. Re-fitting was done at Kutmaster in Utica, NY, and at several other factories where bayonets were shortened, expertly re-tooled, and blades polished. This exact type is illustrated on page 176 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see book’s page scan attached).
This very practical knife in great overall condition; the blade has not been professionally sharpened; the edge is very sharp still; the tip is intact. This is a scarce “Bowie tip” type (the majority of these fighters had “spear point tips”) with gun-blued handle parts. This fighter is about 11″ / 28 cm overall; bright polished blade is about 6-1/4″ / 16 cm. Ricasso is marked KUTMASTER / UTICA, N.Y. U.S.A. on one side. Original black plastic grips are intact. The muzzle ring and bayonet release mechanism have been removed during conversion; all parts are tight with no play. Original leather scabbard is used, but it is in very good shape overall, considering the age. The leather is soft and supple still; the keeper is intact; some minor filed-expedient re-stitching at the tip is noted for accuracy. This interesting WW2 Kutmaster fighting knife converted from M1 bayonet overruns will be a great addition to any collection.
This original WW2 Kutmaster fighting knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way; it is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; Garand clips are not included with the lot 😉
