I Wilson Sheffield rigging knife marked HUDSON (BAY) COMPANY 1870. Rare Victorian era sail cutting knife type in great overall condition, considering the age. FREE EXPEDITED SHIPPING WITHIN THE U.S. FOR THIS ITEM.
This is a very interesting Victorian era specimen made by I. Wilson, Sheffiled and designed specifically for cutting / carving sails and other sail rigging tasks. The rounded blade tips are intended to avoid making accidental puncture holes in a sail fabric (even a small hole in the fabric may result in wind ripping an entire sail apart). Needless to say, this type of knives had mostly disappeared once the sailing era came to an end. This type is VERY hard to find nowadays, especially in such fantastic condition.
John Wilson (trademarked as I. Wilson) was a prominent British cutlery manufacturer formed in 1750 in Sheffield, England. John Wilson company manufactured a large variety of rugged field knives which were popular in the Indian and fur trade in the Americas. This antique rigging knife about 9-5/8” / 24.5 cm overall; nicely curved skinning blade is about 5-1/4″ / 13.3 cm. The main blade is marked I WILSON / SYCAMORE ST / SHEFFIELD ENGLAND. The smaller cutting blade is marked 7• on the top plane; both blades are very sharp with what appears to be original factory edges. Solid full-tang construction; hardwood handle scales on 5 iron pins. Original rosewood handle scales are in excellent condition for the type – no cracks or chips; the handle is tight with no play. The handle is marked with the 3-line Hudson Bay Company stamp on one side that is only partially visible: HUDSON … / COMPANY / 1870. Overall, this antique I Wilson Sheffield rigging knife is in excellent condition, considering the age. Don’t miss your chance to add this rare I Wilson Sheffield rigging knife to your collection!
