A scarce Indian/fur trade skinner was made by Fredrick Herder Abr. Sohn in Solingen, Germany in the late 1800s. F. Herder manufactured a large variety of rugged field knives which were popular in the Indian and fur trade in the Americas. A similar skinning knife type also made by I Wilson is illustrated on page 62 of the fantastic reference source INDIAL TRARE RELICS book. The previous owner had paid $350 for this knife; original collection sticker is still on the blade.
This antique skinner is about 8-1/4” / 21 cm overall; nicely curved skinning blade is about 4″ / 10 cm. Solid 3/4-tang construction; hardwood handle scales on 3 iron pins. Original wood handle with a fancy pewter-inlaid pommel is in very good condition overall; no cracks or chips; the handle is tight with no play. Thin blade has been lightly re-sharpened, it is very sharp still; the tip is intact. Overall, this antique Fredrick Herder Abr Sohn Solingen skinning knife is in excellent condition, considering the age.
