Description

WW2 EGW fighting knife, scarce “long blade” type with unmarked ricasso, original leather scabbard; excellent overall condition, considering the age.

Original WW2 era EGW “private purchase” type fighting knife in practically unused condition which was manufactured during the war by E.G. Waterman Company in New York. This is the scarcer “long” type with 7.25-inch unmarked blade – E.G. Waterman Company made these sturdy private-purchase fighters in order to satisfy the demand for the much-needed fighting knives early in the War. This type is illustrated on pages 114-115 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see book’s page scans attached).

These “private purchase” fighting knives were popular with the troops during the war; most of these knives were used as intended – in camps, trenches, and in combat. EGW’s high carbon steel blades kept a good edge but were prone to rust; relatively few survived the war in presentable condition. This is an unusually well-made example with well-defined form and clean lines; the knife in practically unused condition. This is an unmarked example with no stamps on ricasso. This knife looks practically unused; the edge is razor-sharp still, the tip is intact; no edge nicks or dings on the spine. Stacked leather washers handle with a steel guard, pommel, and a lanyard ring. The handle is tight; all parts are tight with no play. The knife is about 12″ / 30.3 cm from the tip to the lower tang; the blade is about 7-1/4″ / 18.4 cm. Original leather sheath is in excellent overall condition, considering the age; the leather is still soft and supple; the scabbard holds the knife nice and tight; a couple of dark spots on the front panel are noted for accuracy.  This WW2 EGW fighting knife is in 100% serviceable condition still.

This original American WW2 EGW fighting knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the lot 😉 I have a few more American, German, British, Italian, and French fighting knives, as well as some scarce WW2 and WW1 daggers, trench knives and bayonets available for sale – please take a look in the Militaria section.
