Original WW2 era EGW “private purchase” type fighting knife manufactured during the war by E.G. Waterman Company in New York. This is the more scarce 6.5-inch blade/rosewood handle type – most EGW knives had stacked leather washers handles. E.G. Waterman Company made these sturdy private-purchase fighters in order to satisfy the demand for the much-needed fighting knives early in the War. This type is illustrated on pages 114-115 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see book’s page scans attached).
These “private purchase” fighting knives were popular with the troops during the war; most of these knives were used as intended – in camps, trenches, and in combat. EGW’s high carbon steel blades kept a good edge but were prone to rust; relatively few survived the war in presentable condition. An unusually well-made example with well-defined form and clean lines. This is the marked example – it is stamped with the standard EGW / KNIFE stamp on ricasso. This knife is only slightly used; the edge appears to be factory-original. No edge nicks, rust, or pitting on the blade; the edge is very sharp still; the tip is intact. Rosewood handle with a steel guard, oval pommel with a lanyard ring; a couple of thin age-related cracks are noted for accuracy; all parts are tight. The knife is about 11″ / 26 cm overall from the tip to the lower tang; the blade is about 6-1/2″ / 16.5 cm. Original leather scabbard is in excellent overall condition; the leather is still soft and supple; all original stitching, rivets, and keeper are intact. This WW2 EGW fighting knife is in 100% serviceable condition still.
This original American WW2 EGW fighting knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the lot 😉 I have a few more American, German, British, Italian, and French fighting knives, as well as some scarce WW2 and WW1 daggers, trench knives and bayonets available for sale – please take a look in the Militaria section.
