Description
WW2 Collins V44 fighting knife, original No.13 leather scabbard; part of USAF bail-out survival kit. Rare type in excellent condition, considering the age.
Scarce American WW2 era US Air Force model V44 pilot survival/fighting knife manufactured during the war by Collins & Co.; hard-to-find original leather scabbard included. The V44 model was issued to the USAF aircrews (and Australian Royal Air Force) as part of their bail-out survival kit. It was usually stored in the pilot’s seat cushioning and was an all-purpose knife for fighting and survival in the jungle – see an archive photo of one of these WW2 era survival kits. This exact type is illustrated on pages 110 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the book’s page scan in the photos).
This specimen is only lightly used – it’s in better-than-average condition for the type. The edge is razor-sharp still, no nicks on the edge or dings on the spine; bronze guard is intact. Ricasso is stamped COLLINS & Co. / “hand with hammer” logo / LEGITIMUS / MADE IN USA / No. 18; solid cast bronze cross-guard is unmarked, as intended. Black Bakelite handle is in excellent overall condition; no chip, cracks, or deep scratches; all parts are tight with no play. This huge knife is about 14-1/8″ / 36 cm overall; the blade is about 9-1/2″ / 24 cm long. Original leather scabbard is in great condition, considering the age. The throat is stamped COLLINS & Co. / “hand with hammer” logo / LEGITIMUS and large number 13. The leather is a little dry; original stitching and rivets are intact. These huge WW2 era V44 survival knives are VERY hard to find in better grades. This original USAF WW2 Collins V44 fighting knife will be a welcome addition to any
