Description
Rare vintage Case XX “pig sticker” type fighting dagger with “in-theater” modified jigged bone handle scales and original GI-signed leather sheath. Made by W.R. Case Cutlery circa 1930-1940 in Bradford, Pennsylvania, USA. This type was popular with the American GIs and “pig stickers” were used extensively as fighting knives during WW2. The earlier “nickel-silver fittings/jigged bone” handle type is hard-to-find nowadays – Case XX had ceased the use of strategic metals and time-consuming jigged bone handles during the war; all later “pig stickers” had very simple wood handles and no guards to expedite the wartime production. This type, as well as later-war-time production types are illustrated on pages 94-95 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W. Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the page’s photo attached).
This Case XX dagger is about 8-3/4” / 22.3 cm overall; the blade is about 4-7/8″ / 12.3 cm long. Solid full-tang construction with silver-nickel half-guard and attractive jigged green bone handle scale on one side with nickel pins. The other side has been neatly “theater-dressed” with aircraft Plexiglas piece over what looks like the photos of the US Navy serviceman and his sweetheart or a wife. The handle is solid; all parts are tight with no play. The blade is razor-sharp; the tip is intact. Original leather sheath is in fair overall condition, considering the age. The stitching on the sharp edge side has been cut; the front panel is signed BUNK in large letters that are barely visible. A few typical age-related scuff marks and scratches are noted for accuracy. This early war WW2 Case Pig Sticker fighting knife type is hard-to-find these days; don’t miss your chance to add this unique WW2 fighter to your collection. This is a great WW2 era “non-regulation” US fighting knife with a lot of character; you will not be disappointed.
This attractive WW2 Case Pig Sticker fighting knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it’s in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the knife 😉 I have a few more vintage US-made knives, as well as WW2 era combat knives and bayonets, scarce WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers and trench knives from other countries available for sale – please take a look in our Militaria section.
