Description
WW2 Aerial Cutlery fighting knife – rare “private purchase” type, original leather scabbard included; rare maker. Hard-to-find American WW-II fighter in great overall condition, considering the age.
Original and hard-to-find WW-II era fighting knife manufactured by Aerial Cutlery Co. In addition to 52,000 M3 Trench Knives manufactured on order for the US government by during the war, Aerial Cutlery had also produced several types of fighting knives that ware sold on a market. All types of these “private purchase” knives are scarce as Aerial did not make a lot of them to begin with. This exact type is illustrated on pages 48-49 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see book’s page scans attached).
This WW2 Aerial Cutlery fighting knife is used but it’s in better-than-average condition for the type since most of these fighting knives were used in the filed as intended. The knife is about 10-1/4” / 26 cm overall; polished blade is about 5-7/8″ / 15 cm. The blade has been re-sharpened; it is very sharp still; the tip is intact. Stacked leather washers and colored fiber spacers handle; original iron guard and hammer-like iron pommel; all parts are tight with no play. Ricasso is stamped AERIAL / CUT. MFG. CO. / MARINETTE WIS. Original leather scabbard with a ornamental pattern on the front. All original parts are intact; the leather is soft and supple still. Overall, this WW2 Aerial Cutlery fighting knife is in 100% serviceable condition; this type is getting harder to find every year.
These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the lot 😉 I have a number of vintage American-made collectible knives in the store, please take a look at the store’s American Blades section.
