USA 1870 Ames USN sword bayonet made by Ames Manufacturing Company, intact original leather scabbard included, only 10K made. Rare type in excellent overall condition, considering the age.
Scarce original Model 1870 “sword bayonet” for the rolling block Remington Navy Rifle. Rare type as only 10,000 of M1870s were ordered by the Navy; only a few survived in decent condition. This specimen is a bit used but in it is in much better than average condition for the type.
The bayonet is about 24-3/4” / 63 cm overall; straight ”sword” blade is about 20-1/8” / 51 cm long; The blade is straight with no nicks or dings on the spine; the tip is intact. Ricasso is sharply stamped AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE on one side, U.S.N. / G.G.S. / 1870 on the other. Solid cast bronze handle with the “eagle feather” pattern is in excellent condition for the type – no large dings, contact marks, or edge nicks on the guard / muzzle ring. The handle is stamped with letter inspection marks on the pommel and near the iron release spring. Bayonet release mechanism is original and it is 100% functional; the handle is solid with no play. Original leather body with brass fittings scabbard is also in near-perfect shape, considering the age. Frog stud is intact; original metal tip is nice and tight; a few minor contact marks are noted for accuracy. These original M1870 scabbards are actually harder to find in better grades than the bayonet itself since most simply didn’t last long in the elements. This type is VERY rare this nice and complete.
