John Russell Green River Works Hunting Bowie, split-stag handle, leather sheath. Rare original mid-1800th American hunter in great overall condition, considering the age.
Antique J. Russell Manufacturing & Co. Green River Works Hunting Bowie made in the US in the mid-1800th. John Russell Manufacturing Company was originally established in 1834 on the Green River by Deerfield, Massachusetts. It’s one of the oldest American cutlery manufacturers which supplied hunting, fishing and trade knives to half-the-country during the American Great Expansion era and the American Civil War – this knife is a classic Americana, a real piece of US history.
This antique Hunting Bowie is used but it’s in better-than-average condition for the type. The knife is about 10-5/8″ / 27 cm overall; spear-point blade is about 6-1/4” / 15.8 cm. The edge is very sharp still, the tip is intact. This is a solid, well-built knife with a well-defined spear-point blade. The handle is split-stag handle scales on brass pins with oval bronze guard. All parts are tight with no play; no chips or cracks on the stag – this type is rare this nice. The knife is very well-balanced and sits comfortably in the hand. Vintage leather sheath is probably not original to the knife but it fits the blade perfectly.
