WW2 Wilkinson Sword FS dagger 1st pattern – rare original early-war British Fairbairn Sykes fighting knife in very good overall condition, considering the age.

Classic early WW2 era British FS “Fairbairn Sykes” fighting dagger manufactured by the famous Wilkinson Sword of London, England. This is a mega-rare “tapered blade” FS 1st pattern manufactured early in the war. The original blade design was lethal but the needle-like tip turned out to be too fragile and easy to break. Taking the real battlefield experience into the consideration, the FS blade design was changed to a more practical “2nd pattern FS daggers for the later issues. A relatively small number of the 1st pattern FS daggers was manufactured; very few survived the war. This exact FS dagger type is illustrated on page 127 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books on the subject of US military edged weapons (see the book’s page scans attached). Originally designed as the “commando dagger” for the elite British special-ops forces, these “FS” fighting knives became super-popular with the British and American servicemen stationed in the UK during the war. Allied servicemen carried FS daggers in practically every combat theater in Europe, North Africa and in the Middle East. Looks like one of the US Army Rangers overlooking a beachhead landing in Algeria is sporting one such British-made FS dagger  – see the photo scan attached (photo is for reference only).

This WW2 Wilkinson Sword FS dagger 1st pattern is used, but it is still in the above-average condition for the type. The blade has been re-sharpened; the very end of needle-like tip is missing. Knurled cast bronze handle is unmarked as intended; the entire handle including the S-guard is chromed; most of the finish is intact.  Ricasso is etched WILKINSON SWORD Co. Ltd. LONDON on one side, THE F-S FIGHTING KNIFE on the other. Typical vise marks on the narrow-nob bronze pommel; all parts are solid with no play; come minor contact marks on the bronze are noted for accuracy. This dagger is about 11-3/4″ / 30.2 cm overall; bright-finish blade is about 6-3/4″ / 17.3 cm; a few surface spots and minor pitting on isolated areas of the blade are noted for accuracy. Original scabbard did not survive. These 1st pattern FS daggers are rare in any shape or form nowadays; don’t miss your chance to add this rare original WW2 Wilkinson Sword FS dagger 1st pattern to your collection!
