Scarce US Navy Underwater Demolition Team (UDT) knife with original “navy-gray” NORD composition scabbard; manufactured by Union Cutlery in Olean, NY under KA-BAR trademark. The WW2 era Underwater Demolition Teams became the cornerstone of the modern-day Navy SEALs. This particular “MK2 conversion” UDT type is illustrated on page 27 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see book’s page scan attached).
The knife is about 12-1/4″ / 31 cm overall; the blade is about 7″ / 17.7 cm. No spine dings or edge nicks the blade; the pommel is nice and tight – scarce this nice. The blade has been lightly re-sharpened; it is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact. Ricasso is unmarked; the guard is stamped USN MK2 on one side, KA-BAR on the other. Stacked leather washes with an interesting single red spacer under the steel guard; all parts are tight with no play.
Original Navy-gray NORD composition scabbard by Beckwith Manufacturing with original finish. Production numbers on the back of the throat indicate the very first delivery to US Navy in November 1943. No cracks, dents or chips on the plastic; minor test cuts on one of the plastic ribs are noted for accuracy. The webbing is great with no rust/mold stains or damage. A classic WW2 era American UDT fighting knife in great overall condition, considering the age. Don’t miss your chance to add this WW2 USN UDT fighting knife to your collection!
