Description

WW2 RIA M1905 bayonet cut-down made in 1906, cut-down and refitted by AFH, bowie-tip blade, brown grips, M7 composition scabbard included.

Original WW2 era “short” M1 bayonet and M7 composition scabbard for US M1 Garand rifleThis is a typical so-called “pattern M1942” bayonet of the era – on original 16″ blade M1905 bayonet was cut-down and re-tooled to about 10″ in 1942-1943. This specimen was originally made before WW1 by Rock Island Arsenal in 1906: R.I.A. / “flaming bomb” ordinance mark / 1906 on ricasso on one side, US on the other. The actual re-tooling was done by American Fork and Hoe Company circa 1943: small AFH stamp on the metal part of the handle. This is an unusually high-quality manufacture bayonet (in comparison to the typical late-war era production) with crisp lines and excellent quality throughout.

Also, this is a rare brown grips type – AFH had replaced the original walnut handle scales with short-lived brown plastic grips. Brown grips were made from an earlier type of plastic (commonly called CAB) that wasn’t resistant to the solvents the army was using in the field, so the production of the CAB plastic grips was quickly discontinued. Only about 100,000 brown CAB grips were made in total; most were lost to the use and abuse in the field. “Brown-grips” bayonets were manufactured for about a month; a rare find these days.

The bayonet is in excellent overall condition; it is practically unused. The edge is very sharp still; the tip is intact; about 95% of the original bluing remaining. Muzzle ring and pommel are excellent with no dings or contact marks. Bayonet release mechanism is tight and 100% functional. Brown plastic handle grips are in great shape with just a few typical scuff marks here and there. The bayonet is about 14-1/2″ / 36.8 cm overall; the blade is about 10″ / 25.4 cm long. Original M7 composition scabbard is in great as well; no chips or cracks on the plastic; it is in 100% serviceable condition still.

This original WW2 RIA M1905 bayonet cut-down type is rare this nice as most were used in the field as intended. This WW2 RIA M1905 bayonet cut-down M1942 type is not cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the bayonet 😉
