Description

WW2 Patton Sword fighting dagger made from WW1 era M1913 Calvary Saber manufactured in 1914 by Springfield Arsenal (SA). Rare one-of-a-kind type in great condition, considering the age.

Very rare WW2 era fighting dagger made from the hilt section of the WW1 era M1913 Cavalry Saber, aka the “Patton Sword” (M1913 sword description page is the courtesy of Wikipedia). These “Patton Sword” daggers were made early in the war for the US servicemen using M1913 Calvary swords and even some older Civil War sabers. During the first couple of years of WW2 the US servicemen had no standard-issue fighting knife so military was desperately looking for a quick an inexpensive way to satisfy the demand for the much-needed fighting knives early in the War. Someone came up with the idea of re-purposing these old sabers (and by than obsolete weapons anyway) info fighting knives and daggers. A large quantity of Patton Swords and even older Civil War era sabers were converted into somewhat crude, but very practical fighting knives and trench daggers. Each M1913 saber was cut to make 3 fighting knives. Obviously, the “hilt part” fighters are scarcer than the rest.

These intimidating “Patton Sword” fighters were made by a number of American makers during the war. The “leather-wrapped handle” dagger is one of the best known examples of such side arms; unfortunately the manufacturer’s name of this particular “Patton Sword fighting knife” style has been lost. This actual type is illustrated on pages 228-229 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see the pages’ scans attached).

This dagger is about 14” / 35.5 cm overall; fullered dual-edge blade is about 7-5/8” / 19.4 cm; razor-sharp edges are near-perfect, the tip is intact. The blade is etched OSS on one side. Unfortunately I don’t know if it is a reference to the WW2 era Office of Strategic Services or it’s  just someone’s initials. The original M1913 Saber that this dagger was converted from was manufactured during WW1 by the famous Springfield Arsenal (SA) in 1914. Ricasso is stamped SA / 1914 / US “flaming bomb”  ordinance mark on one side,  arsenal serial number 10296 /  US on the other. Leather-wrapped handle with the left-over saber’s handle part for a pommel and an iron-and-leather wrap handguard is in great overall condition, considering the age. The leather is nice and tight; the guard and the pommel are tight with no play. Original scabbard did not survive. Overall, this interesting and certainly one-of-a-kind WW2 Patton Sword fighting dagger made from WW1 era M1913 Cavalry Saber is in excellent condition. Don’t miss your chance to add it to your collection!

This original WW2 Patton Sword fighting dagger has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; Garand clips are not included with the lot 😉  I have several fighting knives made from converted sabers, as well as some scarce WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers and trench knives available for sale – please take a look in my store’s Militaria section.
