Very rare and desirable WW2 era Model 2 Commando Combat fighting knife was made by the famous John Ek in Hamden, Connecticut. This Ek Knives Commando is one of the so-called “private purchase” fighting knives that were manufacturing for the American GIs by a number of knifemakers during the war. John Ek was probably one of the best-known makers of the time; his hand-made fighting knives were famously simple, yet very practical and reliable sidearms highly regarded by the men in the uniform (General Patton was one the more famous fans and carried one of Ek creations throughout the war).
John Ek was selling his fighter to the active-duty personnel only and offered a life-time warranty to the original buyer. He serialized each WW2 era knife for his record-keeping. By mid-war Ek’s knives were so popular with the troops that John could barely keep up with the demand. By 1944 he hired 3 helpers to run a full-time production making 6 different fighting knives’ models, 7 days a week, two shifts per day. This exact model 2 type is illustrated on page 116 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see the scans of book’s pages attached). This early-production Model 2 Commando Combat is serial-numbered (serial 2 / P902 on ricasso); the blade is stamped John Ek KNIFE / HAMDEN. CONN. This serial translates to 16,902nd knife made by John Ek during the war (out of approximately 30,000 fighting knives overall he made during WW2). The knife is about 11-1/2” / 31.8 cm overall; the blade is about 7″ / 17.8 cm; full-tang construction. The blade is excellent overall condition with original finish and just a couple of minor edge nicks near the tip – this type is VERY hard this nice as most of these fighters were used in the field as intended.
Original contoured rock maplewood handle scales with John’s classic WW2 era poured lead rivets; handle scales have a tiny bit of a play. Finely contoured handle provides a very positive grip; the blade is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact. An extended rounded pommel serves as a practical skull crusher. This Model 2 specimen has a lanyard hole. Original “round top lance tip” type leather scabbard is in great overall condition, considering the age; all original stitching, rivets, and keeper are intact; the leather is a little stiff but in great shape overall.
Overall, this WW2 John Ek model 2 fighting knife / combat dagger and its original leather scabbard are in 100% serviceable condition still – VERY rare this nice. Almost 80 years after it was made this rare WW2 John Ek model 2 fighting knife is in 100% serviceable condition still. This type is hard to find in any condition these days – don’t miss your chance to add it to your collection! This original WW2 John Ek model 2 fighting knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; Garand clips are nor include with the knife 😉 I have a few WW2 era British and Australian combat knives and bayonets, scarce American and German WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers and trench knives available for sale – please take a look in the store’s Militaria section.
