Description
WW2 fighting knife converted M1 bayonet – made from production overruns, 6.75-in blade, spear-point tip type; original leather scabbard. Scarce type in rare UNUSED condition.
An interesting WW2 era American fighting knife made from M1 bayonet production overruns. This was a “stop-gap” measure to satisfy the demand for the much-needed fighting knives during the war. Re-fitting was done at several factories where bayonets were shortened, expertly re-tooled, and blades polished. This exact type is illustrated on page 176 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see book’s page scan attached).
This very practical knife in rare unused condition; the blade has not been re-sharpened; original factory edge is razor-sharp; the tip is intact. This “spear point tip” type fighter is about 11-3/8″ / 29 cm overall; bright polished blade is about 6-3/4″ / 17 cm. Ricasso is unmarked – this bayonet has never been completed before the conversion. Original plastic grips are riveted, not bolted. The muzzle ring and bayonet release mechanism have been removed; all parts are tight with no play. Original and hard-to-find brown leather scabbard is in excellent shape, considering the age. The leather is soft and supple still; the keeper, all rivets and stitching are intact. This interesting WW2 era “ex-bayonet fighting knife” WW2 fighting knife converted M1 bayonet fighter will be a great addition to any collection.
This original WW2 fighting knife converted M1 bayonet has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way; it is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; Garand clips are not included with the lot 😉 I have a few more American bayonets and fighting knives, as well as some scarce European WW2 and WW1 fighting knives, daggers, trench knives and bayonets available for sale – please take a look in the store’s Militaria section.
