Description
Original WW2 era American fighting knife manufactured during the war by Western Cutlery in Boulder, Colorado. This is the ever-popular WW2 era “Shark” model fighting knife, but a much scarcer Type 2 with the blued blade (most Sharks had bright-finished blades), a more practical heavy-duty round steel pommel, and an iron guard. Western Cutlery designated this type as model G46-6. This exact type is illustrated as the bottom knife on page 233 of the KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons.
The knife is about 10-1/4” / 26 cm overall; a well-balanced “gun-blued” fullered blade is about 5-7/8″ / 15 cm. The edge is razor-sharp still, the tip is intact; about 80% of the original blueing is remaining – scarce this nice. Stacked leather washers handle with black and red fiber spacers at the ends, solid steel guard and hammer-like round iron pommel. A few lower leather washers are missing another half; could be a nice restoration project for someone who know his business. The rest of the handle is in good shape; al parts are tight with no play. Original leather scabbard is in great shape, considering the age. The leather is a bit dry but has no cracks, cuts or puncture holes; the keeper is nice and tight; all original stitching and rivets are intact. The back panel has GI’s initials KG carved in the center. Most of these “Shark” fighting knives were used as intended during the war and relatively few specimens survived in good condition. Overall, this scarce G46-6 Shark is in pretty good shape; with proper care it will last you another 75 years 😉
This attractive “blued blade”/round pommel Type 2 WW2 Western G46-6 Shark fighting knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it’s in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the knife 😉 I have a few more vintage European knives, as well as WW2 era combat knives and bayonets, scarce WW1 and WW2 fighting daggers and trench knives from other countries available for sale – please take a look in our Militaria section.
