Rare original WW2 era “sword blade” type huge fighting knife with a massive dual-edge spear point blade and a solid cast bronze T-guard that was cast directly into the blade. The stacked aluminum, bronze, and Bakelite washers/spacers handle with a large bronze pommel is very well-balanced to compensate for such a large and heavy blade. The quality of work is pretty amazing, considering this fighter was likely made in fairly rudimentary conditions. Usually, these “theater-made” fighters were made from whatever materials were available on hand. Very similar-looking fighting dagger types are illustrated on pages 41 and 44 of THEATER MADE MILITARY KNIVES OF WW2 book by Bill Wright – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see book’s page scan attached). It is possible these were made by the same maker.
This massive fighting knife is about 12-7/8″ / 32.7 cm overall; the blade is about 7-1/2″ / 19 cm long, about 6.5 mm thick at the thickest point. This specimen is used, but it is excellent condition for the type, considering the age and abuse in the field. The blade has been lightly re-sharpened; it is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact; a few minor surface rust spots on the blade are noted for accuracy. No markings on the blade or on the handle; which is common for the type. The handle with a large bronze T-shape cross guard and rounded bronze pommel is excellent; all parts are tight with no play.
Original leather scabbard is in excellent overall condition as well, considering the age. The leather is soft and supple still; all rivets, stitching, and the keeper are intact. Overall, this original “theater made” WW2 theater made fighting dagger is in 100% serviceable condition still. With proper care it will last you another 90 years 😉
This attractive WW2 theater made fighting dagger has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, this set is in original “as is” condition.
