Description
Original WW2 era EGW “private purchase” type fighting knife in slightly used condition; this WW2 fighter was manufactured during the war by E.G. Waterman Company in New York. This is the scarcer “long blade” fighter with 7.5-inch unmarked blade type. E.G. Waterman Company made these sturdy private-purchase fighters in order to satisfy the demand for the much-needed fighting knives early in the War. This exact type is illustrated on pages 114-115 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert and the author of a number of books on the subject of the US military edged weapons (see book’s page scans attached).
These “private purchase” fighting knives were popular with the troops during the war; most of these knives were used as intended – in camps, trenches, and in combat. EGW’s high carbon steel blades kept a good edge but were prone to rust; relatively few survived the war in presentable condition. This is an unusually well-made example with well-defined form and clean lines; this specimen is in excellent overall condition. This is one of the marked examples stamped with the “upside-down” E.G.W / KNIFE logo on ricasso. This knife looks is only slightly used; the edge is razor-sharp still, the tip is intact; no edge nicks or dings on the spine. Stacked leather washers handle with a steel guard, pommel, and a lanyard ring. The handle is tight; all parts are tight with no play. The knife is about 11-7/8″ / 30.2 cm from the tip to the lower tang; the blade is about 7-1/2″ / 18.8 cm. Original WW2-period leather scabbard is the early-issue all-leather MK scabbard. It’s of the much-better quality that the usual “flat” type, very simple sheath these EGW knives were sold with. This scabbard is in excellent overall condition for the type; the leather is still soft and supple; all original stitching and staples are intact. This WW2 EGW fighting knife is in 100% serviceable condition still; you will not be disappointed.
This original American WW2 EGW fighting knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; Garand clips are not included with the lot 😉 I have a few more American, German, British, Italian, and French fighting knives, as well as some scarce WW2 and WW1 daggers, trench knives and bayonets available for sale – please take a look in the Militaria section.
