Description
WW2 Case XX V44 survival knife, part of the aircrew “bail-out” kit, original leather scabbard included. Rare type in great overall condition, considering the age.
Scarce WW2 era US Air Force V44 pilot survival/fighting knife manufactured by Case Cutlery in Bradford, PA during the war; hard-to find original leather scabbard is included. The V44 was issued to the USAF and some Commonwealth aircrews as part of their survival kit during the War – see a reference photo of one of those pilot survival kits that were sealed inside of the pilot’s seat. The V44 was an all-purpose knife for fighting and survival in case of a bail-out. This exact type is illustrated on pages 110-111 of KNIVES OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY WORLD WAR II book by Michael W Silvey – a well-established expert an author of many books about US military edged weapons (see the book’s scans in the photos). This specimen is only slightly used and rare as such – most of these handy knives were used as intended in the field; very few specimens survived the war in better grades. I have another V44 “bail-out knife” manufactured by Collins available for sale – it’s a harder to find V44 type; please take a look.
This huge knife is about 14-1/8″ / 36 cm overall; the blade is about 9-3/8″ / 23.8 cm long. The edge has been lightly re-sharpened; it is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact; some light pitting on the blade that had been buffed-out is noted for accuracy. No typical edge nicks, ding marks the spine or the bronze guard – better than the average condition for the type. Ricasso is stamped CASE XX; solid cast bronze “double-ball” cross-guard is unmarked. Black plastic handle with 3 white metal rivets is in excellent overall condition. No cracks on the handle or the guard; all parts are tight with no play. Original leather scabbard is in very good condition, considering the age. The leather is a bit dry but intact, the belt hanger is intact as well.
These huge WW2 era survival knives are getting very hard to find nowadays, especially in better grades. This scarce WW2 Case XX V44 survival knife will be a welcome addition to any collection. This rare and attractive WW2 Case XX V44 survival knife / original leather scabbard set has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, this set is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; Garand clips are not included with the knife 😉
