Classic German WW1 era circa 1916-1918 Aufpflanzbares Kampfmesser (Fixable Combat Knife in German) with original metal scabbard; manufactured during WW1 by Anton Wingen Jr. in Solingen, Germany. Very cool-looking “beard beak pommel” conversion weapon – could be used a short bayonet on a standard M1898 Mauser rifle or as handy close-quarters fighting knife. These trench daggers / bayonets combination weapons were very popular with the German infantry as they proved to be handy multi-purpose weapons/tools; something the standard-issue long Mauser bayonet lacked.
This “Othello” brand fighting knife/fixable bayonet is in rare UNUSED condition – this type is almost impossible to find this nice and complete as most of these fighters were used in the field as intended. The blade is excellent with no pitting, dings or nicks on the blade; needle-like tip is intact; ANTON WINGEN JR / SOLONGEN / OTHELO “bearded dude” stamp on the blade is sharp and clear. The knife is about 11” / 28 cm overall; the blade is about 6” / 15.2 cm. Not cleaned; original leather washer is still on the blade; a few minor surface rust spots are noted for accuracy. The blade is VERY sharp still; original factory edge; VERY rare this nice. Original checkered wood handle scales are nice and tight; no chips or cracks; all parts are tight with no play. Original metal scabbard is in excellent shape as well. The keeper and leather belt hanger is soft and supple still; no broken or missing parts – rare as such. Metal scabbard retained about 90% of its original black finish.
Over 100 years later this WW1 Germany Anton Wingen fighting knife / bayonet and its original scabbard are in 100% serviceable condition still. Today most of the surviving WW1 era German Aufpflanzbares Kampfmessers are in private collections and rarely come up for sale.
