Classic WW1 era French Army model M1916 LE VENGEUR (the Avenger) fighting dagger/trench knife made circa 1916 by S.G.C.O. in France. This fighter is the typical “Le Vengeur” WW1 production design with the hardwood handle, extra-wide iron guard, and hard to find original metal scabbard.  This exact type is illustrated on the cover page, and in greater detail on pages 203-212 in the excellent French reference book French Knives During World War One by Christian Mary (see the book’s scans in the photos). These “trench daggers” were popular with the French infantrymen as they provided to be much handier in the close-quarters fighting than the standard-issue rifle bayonets or sabers. The “Avenger” was a simple, but practical and deadly sidearm; the French military used the M1916 well into the late 1950th.

This specimen is in much better than average condition for the type – original factory edge on the blade; no rust, edge nicks or chips; hardwood handle  is intact with no cracks or chips; all parts are tight. The dagger is about 11” / 28 cm overall; the dual-edge blade is about 6-5/8” / 17 cm; ricasso is stamped with the S.G.C.O. rectangular frame logo. Little known about this particular manufacturer; an uncommon type. The blade is razor-sharp still; the tip is intact – this type is rare this nice as these high-carbon blades were prone to corrosion. Original redwood handle with the lug nut in the pommel, iron collar and a wide iron cross guard. The guard is stamped with the “star/letter B” arsenal acceptance mark on the underside. All parts are tight with no play. Hard-to-find factory metal scabbard with the original gun-blue finish is included; the belt hanger is intact. This scabbard type is rare this nice and complete as these flimsy hangers almost always are damaged or missing.

Rare original WW1 French Le Vengeur SGCO fighting knife by a hard to find maker AND in excellent overall shape, considering the age.  Over 100 years after it was made, this scarce WW1 French Le Vengeur SGCO fighting knife/original metal scabbard is in 100% serviceable condition still. Today most of the surviving WW1 era Le Vengeurs trench knives are in private collections & rarely come up for sale. This type is VERY hard to find these days in such an excellent condition; don’t miss your chance to add this attractive WW1 era M1916 dagger to your collection!
