Description

WW1 era RIA M1905 bayonet dated 1912 with original uncut 16-in blade; re-issued in WW2 with USN MK1 composition scabbard; rare unused condition.  Hard to find this nice and complete.

Original WW2 era M1905 bayonet manufactured in 1912 by the famous Rock Island Arsenal (RIA) in Illinois, USA; scarce uncut 16″-blade specimen in rare UNUSED condition.  A scarce type in general – mid-war most of the original M1905 bayonets were cut-down and re-furbished as the “short pattern” bayonets often referred to as M1942.Uncut WW1 era RIA -made M1905s are hard to come by nowadays, especially in unused condition.

This is a well-made bayonet with crisp lines and a well-defined edge; ricasso is sharply stamped RIA / “flaming bomb”/ 1912 on one side, US / 224629 serial on the other; one of the wood grips is unit-marked 985 on one side. The bayonet looks unused; the blade is still covered in rust-preventing cosmoline; the blade is very sharp still; the tip is intactit’s in better than average condition for the type. No typical ding marks on the spine; the muzzle ring is a bit rusty but in great overall condition; the pommel is in good shape as well with no contact. Original walnut  handle grips are in great shape with no damage; all handle parts are tight. The scabbard/bayonet release mechanism is excellent and 100% functional. The bayonet is about 20-1/2″ / 52 cm overall; the blade is about 15-7/8″ / 40.5 cm. Original “long” composition scabbard with MK1-marked steel throat is in great condition. The underside plate is marked B3/0N. Steel throat is marked USN / MK 1 . The US War Department had told the manufactures to “waste nothing”, so they used whatever material was suitable during production, including the unused quantity of scabbard parts intended for training bayonets and discontinued USN MK1 Utility Knife. Overall, this WW1 era RIA M1905 bayonet that saw a daylight again during WW2 days is in very much serviceable condition still. A desirable and highly collectible type; VERY rare this nice.
