Spain billfighting dagger, aka Slap or Spanish Puntilla “Surte del Puñal” with original leather sheath. Scarce type in excellent overall condition.
A seldom-seen Spanish Puntilla bullfighting dagger still used in some areas of Spain by matadors. This peculiar weapon is typically used for a final Coup de grâce – a finishing stub to sever the spine when the bull is already dying in order to shorten the agony of its death. A traditional Spanish Puntilla dates back to the 17th century and it became a standard part of matador’s equipment set by the 1800th – see a copy of the Bullfighting Instruments 1804 print attached in the photos (the actual print is not included with the dagger). The puntilla is mostly replaced by lances and pikes in modern bullfighting; this type is seldom-used nowadays.
This is a very well-made dagger with a cast aluminum/polished steel pommel and iron guard handle. The dagger is about 11-3/4” / 30 cm overall; high quality carbon steel dual-edge blade is about 7-1/4″ / 18.5 cm. Original edge is razor-sharp; needle-like tip is intact. The handle excellent; all parts are tight with no play. Brown leather sheath looks unused; the leather is soft and supple; excellent quality overall.
