Description
Shannon Miller Crane USN M1852 sword, gilt bronze and rayskin wrapped handle, scabbard included. Scarce 1867-1896 US Navy officer’s dress sword type in great condition, considering the age.
Shannon, Miller & Crane were “sellers of equipment for officers of Army, Navy and National Guard”, as they advertised in the 1880th. Shannon, Miller & Crane were based in New York City and had a flagship store located at 46 Maiden Lane in Manhattan till 1896. This is a scarce pre-WW1 USN officer’s dress sword in very good overall condition with intact blade & handle. The sword is about 35-1/2 / 90.2 cm overall; the blade is about 30” / 76.2 cm. The blade has not been cleaned or re-sharpened; the blade has an attractive original dark-gray patina throughout. Al parts are tight with no play; the tip is a little nicked; Federal eagle on the pommel is crisp and clear. The etching is intact; the stamp and logos on ricasso are nice and clear. Rayskin and brass wire wrapped handle; gilt bronze handguard and fittings are in excellent condition, considering the age; nothing has been cleaned or tempered with. The scabbard might be a foot officer’s type; it is in fare condition; the leather is a bit dry and frail near the tip; one spot in the middle is covered with black tape. Plated brass fittings are marked with inspector’s initials J.F. – see photos.
Overall, this Shannon Miller Crane USN M1852 sword is in very good condition, considering the age. Don’t miss to add this scarce Shannon Miller Crane USN M1852 sword to your collection!
