Description

Pennsylvania National Guard M1873 socket bayonet for .45-70 Springfield trapdoor rifle, orig metal scabbard and leather frog. Attractive Indian Wars era specimen in very good overall condition, considering the age.

Original Indian Wars era Model 1873 socket bayonet for .45-70 Springfield trapdoor rifle with original scabbard and frog. The M1873 was the last model of standard-issue socket bayonet, which was used with the 1873 and 1879 “trapdoor” Springfield rifles. This specimen is used but it is in decent condition still; the blade still has most of its original bluing; some minor pitting on the socket is note for accuracy. The heavy-duty triangular “spike” blade is about 18” / 46 cm long; the bayonet is about 21” / 53.3 cm overall; socket length is about 3″ / 76 mm. The blade is straight with no scratches, nicks or dings; original tip is intact. The blade is stamped US on ricasso. Original locking ring and the screw are intact; the ring is not too loose and rotates nicely.

Original metal scabbard is in very good shape, considering the age. There is a dent near the tip but overall the scabbard is in great shape. Most of the original bluing is intact; a few very light surface rust spots are noted for accuracy. Leather frog is a bit dry but intact with all-original stitching; original round brass N.G.P. disk and the leather belt loop are nice and tight. During WW2 years a lot of surviving M1873 “spike” bayonets were cut-up to make trench daggers and fighting knives such as this one I have available for sale; this type is scarce this nice and complete.

This original Indian Wars era Pennsylvania National Guard M1873 socket bayonet has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it’s in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; spent brass is not included with the lot 😉 Don’t miss your chance to add this scarce Vietnam War era bayonet set to your collection!
