Description
Hewes Phillips M1816 flintlock musket conversion bayonet for American Civil War era converted .69 caliber M1816 flintlock musket. An tractive specimen in great condition, considering the age.
Original Civil War era socket bayonet produced 1861-1862 and issued to fit the US Percussion Model 1816 conversion muskets by Hewes & Phillips and Remington. As the Civil War was approaching, the US government had decided to convert its stockpile of M1816 muskets from flintlock to percussion. Hewes & Phillips “flintlock musket conversion bayonets” were designed to fit all M1816 muskets and to replace all older .69 caliber musket bayonets. The Hewes & Phillips conversion blade is the standard Civil War 1855 style, longer and thinner than the original 1816 pattern bayonet blades, but the bayonet preserves the M1816 style socket with its characteristic T-shape mortice. The shape of the blade’s tip is also different from the original M1816 socket bayonet.
This Hewes Phillips M1816 flintlock musket conversion bayonet is used, but it is in very good overall condition for the type. The blade is about 18” / 45.7 cm long; the bayonet is about 21” / 53.3 cm overall; socket length is about 3″ / 75 mm. The blade is straight with no nicks or dings on the spine or edges; original tip is intact. The blade is weakly sharply stamped US on ricasso light pitting is noted for accuracy. There is no scabbard. During WW2 years a lot of surviving M1816 and M1873 “spike” bayonets were cut-up to make trench daggers and fighting knives like this one; intact Hewes Phillips M1816 flintlock musket conversion bayonet specimens in good condition are scarce.
This scarce Hewes Phillips M1816 flintlock musket conversion bayonet has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, it is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos. I have a few scarce WW1 and WW2 bayonets, fighting knives, daggers and trench knives available for sale – please take a look in my store’s Militaria section.
