Rare late 19th century Victorian-era Egyptian Revival solid rose gold watch fob pendant on original gold chain-and-silk ribbon suspension. This “Egyptian Revival” type was inspired by the cultural fascination with ancient Egypt that swept through Europe after the discovery of the now-famous Rosetta Stone and subsequent archaeological explorations. This rare gold piece features a finely detailed sitting sphinx on a flat “pedestal” that was hand-engraved with the owner’s initials N A R forming an artistic neoclassical style monogram, typical of the high Victorian aesthetics. A sphinx is the symbol of strength, wisdom, and mystery; the piece is exquisitely sculpted with period-authentic craftsmanship. The entire set is about 11.9 grams total weight; the sphinx is about 24.14 mm long at the base, 8.8 mm wide at the base, 21.53 mm tall from the base to the to of the ring loop. The ring is about 18.2 mm in diameter. The sphinx rose gold piece is unmarked; tested 14K. The top suspension chain is marked 14K on the inside of the latch. Original black silk ribbon is in fair condition with some fraying on the edges.
