Germany WW1 Mercator folding knife marked DRGM. Simple slim-profile lockback design. Scarce type in great overall condition considering the age.
Original WW1 era German ARMEEDOLCH (military knife in German) pocket knife manufactured primarily for the military by Mercator. The knife is marked D.R.G.M. on the handle’s spine and on the blade’s tang. The acronym D.R.G.M. stands for Deutsches Reichsgebrauchsmuster – it means that the design was officially registered in the centralized German Imperial registry. The “DRGM” registration had a 3-year term; it could be extended just once by another 3 years – this is 100% authentic WW1 era knife. This Mercator folder proved to be popular with the troops; the period-era newspaper ad advertised this knife as “Praktisches Geschenk für jeden Soldaten” – a “Practical gift for every soldier”. This exact type is illustrated on pages 11-12 of the excellent French reference book by Christian Mary Knives and Daggers-Bayonets Used by the German Army During 1914-1945 (see the book’s page scan in the photos).
The knife is about 10-1/8” / 25.7 cm overall fully opened; the blade is about 5-1/2” / 14 cm. The tang is stamped MERCATOTR on one side, D.R.G.M. on the other. The edge has been re-sharpened, it is pretty sharp still; the tip is intact. All parts are tight; the blade has a tiny bit of play; the blade lock is in perfect working order. In spite of the obvious field used and 100+ years of age this knife is in great overall condition; it certainly is 100% serviceable still. Don’t miss your chance to add this original Germany WW1 Mercator folding knife to your collection!
This scarce Germany WW1 Mercator folding knife has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way, the set is in 100% original “as is” condition. These are the actual photos; The Great War medal is used for a scale reference and will not be included with the knife. I have a few vintage Solingen-made knives, as well as some WW1 and WW2 era German combat knives, daggers, bayonets and trench knives available for sale – please take a look in the store’s Militaria section.
