Description

Germany airship Graf Zeppelin 1929 silver medal; commemorative issue D-ZL127 first around the world flight (Kaiser-510). Scarce type, NGC-graded UNC details.

An interesting and scarce pre-WW2 German medal in .900 fitness silver struck in 1929 to mark the airship Graf Zeppelin 1st around-the-world flight; a scarce type (Kaiser-510). Authenticated and graded by NGC Uncirculated Details due to a light trace of a professionally-removed mount on the rim at 11 o’clock (NGC certification #2888483-014). NGC is America’s best and most stringent grading service. Buy with confidence knowing that this coin is 100% authentic, unaltered and professionally graded by some of the most respected numismatic experts.

The dies were made by the famous engraver O. Gloeckler. An excellent Proof specimen with bright original mint luster; scarce this nice.  The inscription on the rim reads “Prussian State Mint, 900 fine silver” in German. A very pretty “airship type” medal with an attractive light-gray patina with goldish overtones; about 36 mm in diameter; 24.85 grams. We also have the same medal but struck in bronze (Kaiser-511.1); please check it out and save on shipping!

Graf Zeppelin (German designation D-LZ 127) was probably the most famous rigid airship ever; it was designated for transporting passengers and cargo over long distances at the speed unheard of at the time. One of the largest airships of the time, Graf Zeppelin had a crew of 36 (!!) men. The airship’s length was 776 feet/236.53 meters; ship’s diameter: 100 feet/30.48 meters; gas volume (Hydrogen): 3,700,000 cubic feet/111,000 cubic meters. This giant ship was propelled by five 550-hp Maybach engines at the maximum speed of 80 mph / 128 km/hr. The most successful commercial airship ever built, Graf Zeppelin flew more than 1,000,000 miles on 590 flights, carrying well over 34,000 passengers without a single injury. Sadly, the “golden era” of these giant airships was brief: the Nazis cut up all of their rigid airships in 1940 as the quality aluminum was needed for Luftwaffe’s warplanes.

This rare Germany airship Graf Zeppelin 1929 silver medal is not a later reproduction or a copy; it is guaranteed to be 100% authentic or your money back. Not cleaned; these are the actual photos. Don’t miss your chance to add this attractive vintage airship memorabilia to your collection!
