Scarce Karl Goetz medal commemorating airship Graf Zeppelin launch in 1928; Kienast medal reference #408. Rigid-frame airship Graf Zeppelin (German designation Luftschiff LZ 127) was the famous “cigar blimp” designated for carrying passengers and cargo over long distances. One of the largest airships of the time, it had a crew of 36 men and could carry up to 24 passengers. Graf Zeppelin became the most recognized blimp of the time after she completed the first intercontinental flight in 1928 and first around-the-world flight in 1929. Graf Zeppelin and its sister ship LZ129 Hindenburg had an innovative design and were designated for carrying many passengers and cargo over long distances. The passengers aboard Graf Zeppelin traveled in unparalleled luxury and comfort, enjoying their meals in the full-size dining room with dishes served on fine 24K gold-trimmed “ivory” china and silver tableware.
The medal is expertly done in the unique Karl Goetz artistic style; the rim is marked “Bayer. Hauptmunzampt. Feinsilber” (Bavarian Head Coinage Office. Fine Silver). About 19.4 grams; about 36 mm in diameter; very attractive original goldish-gray patina throughout; this scarce Goetz “airship type” is hard-to-find so nice. This original Germany 1928 Graf Zeppelin silver medal would make a great addition to any collection. I have another early aviation-related medal by Karl Goetz available for purchase, please take a look.
