Germany 1919 League of Nations medal satirical issue depicting the US, UK, France, others attacking defeated German Imperial eagle. Very attractive specimen in uncirculated condition with original patina.
This is an extremely scarce “Understanding and Justice / League of Nations” medal struck circa 1919 in Germany as a satirical issue in Uncirculated condition. Dated 1919; bronze gilt, signed ligate EB. Obverse: Outbreak of Peace, prostrate German eagle is attacked by French coq, British bulldog, donkey (Italy??), President Wilson as feathered rattlesnake and a monkey (Japan ??). Names Erzberger, Scheidemann below, World-wise League of Nations. Reverse: German eagle soaring over ruined city scape into brilliant sky, Through Sorrow to the Stars inscribed on the edges. The medal is executed in the style of German artist Fritz Behn.
The medal is about 75 mm in diameter; about 154.5 grams / 5.45 oz; plain rim is unmarked. The medal is in excellent overall condition – no typical rim nicks, dings, or scratches; a couple of tiny dark spots are noted for accuracy. Not cleaned; original gilt finish with very attractive golden honey patina with throughout. This specimen came out of an old collection assembled several decades ago.
