Description

George Wostenholm Washington Works Sheffield hunting knife IXL-marked blade, ebony wood handle. Original tubular leather sheath, rare Victorian era type in great overall condition, considering the age.

Scarce Victorian era hunting knife manufactured circa 1848-1890 by the famous “Cutlers to their Majesties” George Wostenholm & Son in Sheffield, England.  George Wostenholm (later G. Wostenholm & Sons) had been one of the best makers of knives, bayonets, swords, and various cutlery in the British Empire since 1745; sadly, the company has been sold in 1971. This is a very well made vintage Hunter – the overall quality and balance is excellent; the blade is slightly pitted at the tip but intact; hard-to find original tubular leather sheath is included. The handle is finely carved exotic African ebony wood with nickel-silver collar.  Ricasso is stamped with the famous I✱XL trademark (I Excel);  G. WOSTENHOLM & SON / WASHINGTON WORKS / SHEFFIELD. ENG. on the blade.  The “WASHINGTON WORKS” logo was used from 1848 to 1890.

The blade has been e-sharpened – it’s very sharp still; the tip is intact. No edge nicks or dings on the spine – rare this nice. Ebony wood handle with silver-nickel pins and bolster is in great shape overall; one thin age-related crack is noted for accuracy; all parts are solid with no play.

The knife is about 10-5/8″ / 27 cm overall; the blade is about 6″ / 15.2 cm long; the knife has an excellent grip and sits quite nicely in the hand. Original tubular brown leather sheath in very good overall condition, considering the age. The leather is still soft, all original stitching and the belt loop are intact. Original intact leather sheaths of this period are VERY hard to find nowadays. This scarce Victorian era George Wostenholm Washington Works Sheffield hunting knife IXL-marked blade Hunter will be a great addition to any collection  – don’t miss your chance to add it to your collection!
