Cold War West Germany Eickhorn paratrooper knife – Fallschirmjäger-Messer LL-TRUPPE model (Type II) made in 1974. Rare unused in original factory box; hard-to-find this nice and complete.

Original Cold War era West Germany military large LL-TRUPPE model paratrooper knife (Fallschirmjäger-Messer), still in the original factory box. This post-WW2 German paratrooper knife was manufactured in 1974 (Type II) by by Eickhorn in Solingen, Germany (Eickhorn’s squirrel logo is etched on the 1974-dated blade). This type has been long-discontinued; these “large” Fallschirmjäger-Messer knives are hard to find nowadays, especially in unused condition AND with original factory packaging. The LL-TRUPPE model is a direct descendant of the original WW2 era German paratrooper “take-down” type Fallschirmjäger-Messer knife illustrated in the excellent French reference book Knives and Daggers-Bayonets Used by the German Army During 1914-1945 by Christian Mary (see the book’s scans attached). The basic construction of both types is the same, it is just that the later model is made via modern production technologies and with newer and better materials. See the dedicated German gravity knives page, courtesy of Wikipedia.

The knife is about 6-1/8″ / 15.5 cm closed; the blade is about 4″ / 10.2 cm long; original edge is razor-sharp; the tip is intact; the blade is finely etched with Eickhorn’s “squirrel” logo on one side. Heavy-duty spike with a needle-sharp tip is about 3-1/2” / 9 cm; bolster is a solid die-forged chunk of steel. Handle scales are made of high-impact olive green plastic marked Bw – for Bundeswehr – Cold War era West Germany’s Armed Forces. The knife could be easily taken apart for cleaning and maintenance by pressing on a small steel square below the arrow – steel bolster comes off and you just slide the handle half sideways. Once exposed, the blade can be completely removed by pulling on the blade lock; quite an ingenious design for a military-grade knife. Original factory box is a little bit-up but in good condition overall.
