Description
Case XX 1983 NASA Astronaut Survival Knife; UNUSED with original display mount, COA, retail packaging. Rare 1958-1983 commemorative issue; only 1000 made.
Scarce W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Co. limited edition commemorative issue of the famous M1 Astronaut Knife. Starting in 1958, CASE made a Model 1 Astronaut Survival Knife for NASA moon-landing Apolo Program. Over time, M-1 knives were flown on all of NASA’s Apollo, Gemini, Skylab, and ASTP missions. One of these “Apolo mission knives” is actually on display in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC, in addition to several other museums around the country. The M-1 is a giant survival knife that resembles a machete, except for the very aggressive saw teeth on the spine and a special super-light opaque polypropylene handle scales – this type of plastic does not give off fumes. Also, the lower edge near the handle is blunt, so an astronaut would have less of a chance of cutting the spacesuit’s glove.
I have two (2) model 1983 commemorative “Asto” knives available – serial numbers 0864 and 0865. Please indicate if you have a preference in serials when ordering.
In 1983 Case had the 25-yr anniversary of the original 1958 M1 Astronaut Knife commemorative issue which was limited to just 1000 serialized knives; serial number is engraved on the blade – see photos. This fantastic knife is showcased in the original mountable hardwood display case which comes with a printed flyer and a COA on the reverse side. Original CASE XX blade protector and the cardboard box the set came with are also included. Each knife is about 17″ / 43 cm overall; satin-polished blade is about 11-5/8″ / 29.5 cm long; original factory edge is razor-sharp; the tip and saw teeth are intact. This type is hard-to-find this nice and complete nowadays, don’t miss your chance to add this rare Case XX 1983 NASA Astronaut Survival Knife it to your collection!
