Rare WR Case & Sons Cutlery Co., USA limited edition Pattern 38 SOD BUSTRER with black handle scales and etched blade. In 1976 Case XX in collaboration with J.C. Penney released the “South Carolina Counties” series of Sod Buster knifes with custom etching.
There are 46 counties in SC; not all got their “own” commemorative knife. There were just 200 specimens of each type for a total of 3000 pieces. CASE produced Sod Busters for the following SC counties: Anderson, Abbeville, Bamberg, Barnwell, Beaufort, Berkley, Calhoun, Charleston, Chesterfield, Clarendon, Colleton, Chester, Edgefield, Fairfield, Georgetown, Greenwood, Hampton, Horry, Lee, Lexington, Laurens, Marlboro, Marion, McCormick, Newberry, Orangeburg, Oconee, Pickens, Union, Richland and Saluda. These were sold at J.C. Penney stores back in the days; all types are hard-to-find nowadays, especially with the original, correctly-labeled retail packaging included.
I have the following counties available still; each knife is serial-numbered 51 on the tang. If the county name in the list below is crossed-out, that means this commemorative type has already been sold:

Each knife is in excellent unused condition; complete with original vintage and correctly-labeled CASE XX orange “pumpkin” retail box and CASE XX wrapping paper/care instructions. The knife is about 4-3/4″ / 12 cm overall closed; the blade is about 3-3/4” / 9.5 cm. The blade opens and closes with a nice snap; black handle scales are in perfect condition. Original factory edge is razor-sharp; the tip is intact. These knives have never been carried or used; they have been sitting in a private collection for nearly 50 years. Original and correctly-labeled “pumpkin” retail boxes are in excellent condition as well; this type is scarce this nice and complete.
