Rare Sheffield-made American Civil War era fighting knife made circa 1850th-1860th by Mappin Brothers in Sheffield, England. Mappin Brothers Co. was established in 1852 in Sheffield, GB by four sons of Joseph Mappin. A scarce fighting knife type in general as its it’s one of the hard-to-find makers, but Joseph Mappin daggers are rare in any shape or form nowadays, especially with the original sheath included.

The blade is sharply stamped MAPPING BROTHERS with the company’s unique “smiling sun” logo and THE HUNTERS COMPANION / WARRANTED NOT TO BE EXCELLED IN QUALITY slogan along the spine. The phrase “warranted not to be excelled in quality” is an archaic expression used to guarantee that a product is of the highest possible quality, essentially the best quality available. These solid, full-tang construction daggers were popular among big game hunters of the British Empire. But starting in the early 1850th, a lot of Sheffield cutlery makers started coming up with American-sounding names and slogans in order to capitalize on the growing American market. These knives are often seen in photographs of American Civil War soldiers, making them desirable collector’s items today.

This attractive fighter is about 10-5/8″ / 27 cm overall; spear-point blade is about 6-1/4″ / 15.8 cm long. Solid full-tang construction with a wide T-shape double-guard made of German silver. Pins and the rectangular engravable inlay are also German silver. The blade has been re-sharpened; it is very sharp still; the tip is intact. Original stag handle scales are in great overall condition, considering the age. One small section near the pommel has been professionally repaired; the repaired piece is almost indistinguishable from the rest of the handle scale. The handle is solid; all parts are tight with no play. Original tubular leather sheath is missing the belt hanger, but other than that it is in very good condition for the type, considering the age. Original stitching; one small side cut at the throat is noted for accuracy.

Overall, this antique American Civil War Mappin Brothers fighting knife is in very good condition, considering the age.
