Scarce Sheffield-made 1848-1860s fighting dagger with dual-edged blade and fancy stag/German silver guard handle. Made by the famous George Wostenholm Celebrated Cutlery in Sheffield, England. George Wostenholm had been one of the best makers of knives, bayonets, swords, and various cutlery in the British Empire since 1745. Sadly, the company got sold in 1971.

This is an early type with the short-lived “officer on a horseback” / IӿXL (meaning I Excel) logo on ricasso. The other side is sharply stamped GEORGE WOSTENHOLM CELEBRATED / IӿXL. This fighting dagger style was quite popular in the States during the American Civil War, as evident from contemporary photos of Union and Confederate soldiers posing with their Bowies and Sheffield-made knives and daggers of all types and sizes became an inseparable part of the American history.

The blade is very sharp, the tip is intact; some pitting on both sides is noted for accuracy. Genuine stag handle scales with German silver handle guard, engravable inlay and pins. The handle is in very good condition with no major damage or repairs; one small age crack by one of the pins near the pommel is noted for accuracy. The handle is solid; all parts are tight with no play. The knife is about 12-1/2″ / 32 cm overall; the blade is about 7-3/4″ / 19.7 cm long. Original sheath did not survive. Overall, this antique George Wostenholm Sheffield fighting dagger is in very good condition, considering the age. Don’t miss your chance to add this rare American Civil War era George Wostenholm Sheffield fighting dagger to your collection!

This George Wostenholm Sheffield fighting dagger has not been cleaned or tampered with in any way; it is in 100% original “as is” condition; these are the actual photos.
