Description

WW2 Germany Leuchtpistole 34 signal pistol manufactured by Carl Walther Werke in 1936. Early manufacture: low serial, wood grips and no “round in chamber” indicator. Original finish throughout; mechanically excellent with crisp action; leather holster, cleaning rod included.

Original WW2 era German Heer (Army) Leuchtpistole 34 model 26.5 mm signal pistol / flare gun. Leuchtpistole 34 was originally designed and later manufactured by Carl Walther. Later in the war it was manufactured by two other makers till about 1942. The Leuchtpistole 34 was made almost entirely of the high-quality duralumin alloy composed of aluminum, copper and magnesium. This lightweight, “no-snag” signal pistol was a major improvement in comparison to large and clunky WW1 era German all-steel flare guns. Leuchtpistole 34 was well-received by the German troops which relied heavily on the use of flares for signaling and communication. In 1942 Leuchtpistole 34 was succeeded by the Leuchtpistole 42 which was made from war-expedient stamped mild steel components at a fraction of the original L-34 cost.

This is an excellent pre-WW2, early-manufacture Walhter example with the low serial number 591 – it was made in 1936. The frame is stamped Waffenfabik Walther Zella-Mehlis (Thϋr.) / 1936 on one side, along with a bunch of Wa359 waffenamt stamps on every possible part. It’s an early pre-WW2 model without the round-in-chamber indicator on the breach and checkered walnut wood grips.

This specimen is in excellent overall condition – no dents on the barrel or the frame, the bore is nice and clean with no pitting; all original parts; matching serials; the action is nice and crisp. The spur and trigger assembly still has its original factory bluing; original lanyard ring is intact; some minor surface rust on iron parts is noted for accuracy. Original anodized duralumin brown finish throughout with only a few typical minor worn-out areas on protruding parts and the end of the barrel. Pre-war production wood grips are in great shape as well. These pre-war manufacture Leuchtpistole 34 are scarce in better grades, but finding such a low serial number is next to impossible nowadays. All original parts are tight with no play; this early production specimen is only slightly used and is mechanically excellent – rare as such.

Black leather holster with the cleaning rod is either Danish or Swedish type made in the 1950s-1960s. It looks exactly the same as the WW2 era German holster, except for interior markings. The leather is soft and supple; all parts are intact but one of the belt loops is broken. The cleaning rod is in excellent condition.

This type is never to be tried with “regular” or shotgun ammunition – these aluminum alloy flare guns were designed only for shooting low-pressure flare cartridges only and are likely going to disintegrate if tried with modern ammo; that would illegal as well. This original WW2 Germany Leuchtpistole 42 signal pistol-flare gun is not a “firearm” under US law and needs no FFL to transfer or own; this WW-2 era flare gun is obsolete; its spare parts are no longer made. I have a few more WW1 and WW2 era flare guns coming up for sale, plus several scarce WW2 fighting daggers and WW1 trench knives available for sale immediately – please take a look in our Militaria section.  This scarce early Walther WW2 Germany Leuchtpistole 34 signal pistol has not been cleaned or tempered with; scarce in such authentic condition. It will be a great addition to any collection.
